Sam Smith - Internal Project Manager

Hailing from the Mid-Atlantic, Sam graduated from the University of Vermont in 2014 with a B.S. in Natural Resources and a minor in Political Science. She previously interned with the National Park Service and USAID before serving as an Agroforestry Extension Agent with the Peace Corps in Senegal. At the Bren School, Sam is specializing in Energy and Climate. Outside of school, she enjoys making elaborate pizzas and browsing used bookstores for old travel guides and maps.

AnnaClaire Marley - External Project Manager
|
AnnaClaire graduated in 2018 from the University of St Andrews in Scotland with a Bachelor of Science in Geography and concentrations in Economics and International Relations. For her senior thesis, AnnaClaire analyzed the environmental factors controlling blue carbon, the carbon stored in coastal ecosystems, and determined specific sites' economic value from carbon sequestration. At Bren, AnnaClaire is specializing in Energy and Climate with focuses in Environmental Data Science and Eco-Entrepreneurship. She plans to pursue a career in climate change mitigation and adaptation after finishing her master's. Outside of research, AnnaClaire enjoys hiking, playing volleyball, and using her new scuba certification.

Kyle Monper - Data Manager

Kyle graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2013 with a B.S. in Plant Science and a B.A. in Environmental Studies. Between graduating and coming to the Bren School, he spent three years at the Central Coast Wetlands Group at Moss Landing Marine Labs where he worked on various wetland research and restoration projects. At Bren, Kyle is specializing in Conservation Planning with a focus in Environmental Data Science and hopes to build a career that uses innovative data approaches for solving environmental problems. When not studying or coding in R, Kyle likes baking bread, rock climbing, and taking long bike rides along the coast.

Ben Edwards - Financial Manager

Ben grew up in the Bay Area before heading east and graduating from Vassar College in 2003 with a B.A. in Philosophy. After graduating, he spent a few years traveling the world and working in between before settling into a career in the construction industry. After five years running his own design build firm with a friend in Venice, CA, he moved to Maui, Hawaii. In Maui he worked for Neighborhood Power, a solar company, as Operations Manager for the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Ben moved back to California in 2015 and began working for Patagonia, where he first learned about Bren and subsequently decided to apply. At Bren, Ben is specializing in Corporate Environmental Management. When not at Bren, Ben enjoys getting outside, road trips, and generally taking advantage of California’s natural bounty.

Max Russer - Outreach Manager

Max graduate from UC Davis in 2015 with a B.S. in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning and a B.A in International Relations. Upon graduating, Max worked as an environmental consultant in the San Francisco Bay Area completing environmental review for development projects throughout the region. Max then moved back home to Santa Barbara where he worked in local land-use planning for the City. As a Bren master’s candidate, Max is specializing in Conservation Planning with a focus in Strategic Environmental Communication. He aims to bridge the gap between his environmental education and passion for the international community by working as a consultant in the international environmental field.
